ATLANTA (AP) — A judge denied bond on Sunday for a man charged with murder in the death of a Georgia state trooper during a vehicular pursuit. Trooper Jimmy Cenescar died after his cruiser left Interstate 85 on Jan. 28 and struck an embankment in the north Atlanta suburb of Suwanee. The Georgia Department of Public Safety said Cenescar was trying to stop a motorcycle for a traffic violation before it fled, prompting the trooper to give chase. The Department announced on Friday that authorities arrested Gerson Ayala Rodriguez and charged him with felony murder, first-degree homicide, felony fleeing and attempting to elude and reckless driving. Cenescar had worked for the Department of Public Safety since January 2023 and had graduated from trooper school in September.

CNN —The prosecution began opening statements Monday morning in the racketeering trial of Grammy-winning rapper Young Thug, who is accused of leading a violent street gang in the Atlanta area affiliated with the national Bloods gang. Young Thug, whose real name is Jeffery Williams, was charged alongside more than two dozen other people under the state’s expansive Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act – known as RICO. Young Thug is among six defendants who have pleaded not guilty to all charges and are standing trial in an Atlanta courtroom, the judge said Monday. Prosecutors say Young Thug is the cofounder of a criminal street gang – Young Slime Life – that’s responsible for violent acts dating back a decade. The trial is expected to last months and could feature a star-studded list of witnesses, including rappers Lil Wayne and Killer Mike.

ATLANTA (AP) — Herschel Walker's wife is seeking to sell the Atlanta house that the football great listed as his residence when he ran for U.S. Senate last year as a Republican. Julie Blanchard, whom Walker married in 2021, has owned the house and 1.5 acre (0.61 hectare) lot for more than 20 years. Democrat Raphael Warnock beat Walker by about 3 percentage points in a December 2022 runoff, ensuring Democrats a majority in the Senate. Such an exemption lowers property taxes and is only supposed to be available if a person is using a house as a primary residence. A financial disclosure statement filed during the Senate race showed the Atlanta house was being used as a rental property as recently as 2021.

New York CNN —Chick-fil-A’s first-ever restaurant is closing after more than a half-century in business. Opened in 1967, the Greenbriar Mall food court location in Atlanta is set to close on Saturday, according to local reports. It’s unclear why the restaurant is closing and Chick-fil-A didn’t immediately return CNN’s request for comment. In 1997, a plaque was installed at the mall restaurant to celebrate its 40th anniversary and celebrate how the company pioneered in-mall dining. Its success led him to evolve the restaurant into the Chick-fil-A chain, and some consider that to be the first Chick-fil-A location.

One person was killed and a Georgia trooper was injured Wednesday as officials cleared out the site of a controversial proposed law enforcement training center in Atlanta. Tensions have been rising in the city over the proposed Public Safety Training Center: a sprawling stretch of 85 acres of forested land in DeKalb County that will have a shooting range, amphitheater and a mock city that will be used for training. Opponents have called the center "Cop City" and protesters have camped out in the area of the proposed site to decry construction. The victims of a shooting that unfolded Saturday night near a popular Atlanta shopping destination that left one dead and five injured were all minors, including a 12-year-old who died, officials said Sunday. Mayor Andre Dickens confirmed the victims' ages at a news conference, according to NBC affiliate WXIA of Atlanta. Dickens said one of the injured victims was in critical condition, which police confirmed. Grant said the incident report with the specific ages of the injured victims is still being processed. A driver died in a freak accident Thursday morning after getting pinned to a ticket machine while trying to exit an Atlanta parking garage, police said. Police said the driver forgot to put his truck in park as he opened his door to reach the machine that operates the exit gate. The parking garage is used by The Starling Atlanta Midtown hotel, NBC affiliate WXIA of Atlanta reported. When she opened her door and leaned over to pick up the card, she inadvertently accelerated and hit the parking kiosk, according to police. Strauss, who became pinned between her car door and the door frame, died on the scene, police said.

Two teenagers have been arrested in South Carolina, charged with murder, and will be extradited in connection with the death of Georgia high school football star Elijah DeWitt, who was found shot in a mall parking lot.
